Understanding and Using Body Language and Voice in Therapy

What do we express through our words without consciously realising it? What do we communicate through our body and voice without being aware of it? When the client’s unconscious “speaks” to our unconscious, are we also able to listen and observe? How can implicit communication be valuable in therapy?

Just as a musician can hear the instruments during a concert simultaneously or alternately—individually and together; just as they can use their hands and fingers, feet, ears, and eyes independently and yet in coordination… Just as, while driving a car, we can perceive and perform many activities at the same time while also talking and listening…

This seminar focuses on multi-level communication: the art of noticing, hearing, and actively using what is communicated between the words in therapy. This skill can be applied both during anamnesis—that is, to gain a better understanding of the client’s problems and resources—and in therapy itself, in order to make the work more effective and its results more sustainable.

The main topics of the seminar include:

• Seeing with many eyes, hearing with many ears, and speaking in many languages

• Anamnesis based on the client’s voice and body language

• Facial expressions, gestures, voice, breathing, and body sounds: the body language of emotions

• Implicit messages conveyed through the therapist’s voice and manner of speaking

Who is the speaker?

Dr. phil. Stefan Hammel, born in 1967, is a systemic family therapist, a hypnotherapist working within the Milton Erickson approach, and a Protestant chaplain at a hospital in Germany. He is the Director of the Institute for Hypnosystemic Counseling in Kaiserslautern.

He is a recognised seminar leader specialising in therapeutic storytelling, the therapeutic use of the client’s resources and elements of their situation, working with implications, Ericksonian therapy, and hypnosystemic counselling.

He is the author of numerous books, including:
